GNOME, started on 15 August 1997, is a free and open-source desktop environment for Linux and other Unix operating systems. Many major Linux distributions, like Debian, Endless, Fedora, Red Hat and more, distribute GNOME as their default desktop environment.

GNOME is developed by the GNOME Project, which is composed of both volunteers and paid contributors. It is an international project that aims to develop frameworks for software development, to make end-user applications and to coordinate efforts to make the use of the software easily accessible.
